Zero Polythene Campaign

Zero Polythene Campaign

Project Status : On going

SEEM Nepal has undertaken a significant milestone project called the Zero Polythene Campaign, aiming to raise awareness among the public regarding the self-management and collection of all plastic waste and municipal solid waste management particularly in public places. Launched in 2017, this campaign has been successfully implemented in numerous municipalities across Nepal.

Polythene and plastic waste pose significant harm to various natural resources such as soil, water, land, and forests. The smoke emitted during their burning also negatively impacts human health, air quality, and the overall environment. The excessive use of polythene and its improper disposal lead to severe consequences, including the deterioration of soil quality, disruption of agricultural areas, and widespread ecological imbalances that ultimately threaten environmental integrity.

Additionally, the presence of polythene waste detracts from the aesthetic beauty of cities and contributes to health issues, while also giving rise to new forms of vulnerable diseases. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, SEEM Nepal has actively worked to combat this problem.

A notable achievement of the campaign is the declaration of Tilottama Municipality in the Rupandehi District as the first Zero Polythene Municipality of Nepal on March 13th, 2020. This remarkable accomplishment serves as a model for other municipalities to emulate, fostering a sense of responsibility and encouraging them to adopt sustainable waste management practices.

Through the Zero Polythene Campaign, SEEM Nepal strives to create a collective consciousness among the public regarding the harmful effects of plastic waste and the importance of responsible waste management. By promoting proper waste disposal practices, recycling initiatives, and the reduction of single-use plastics, the campaign aims to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts associated with polythene waste.

SEEM Nepal’s efforts in implementing the Zero Polythene Campaign not only contribute to preserving the natural resources and environmental integrity of Nepal but also serve as an inspiration for other regions to take proactive measures in tackling plastic waste. The campaign stands as a testament to the organization’s dedication to environmental conservation and creating a healthier and cleaner environment for all.

The municipality was declared a zero polythene by collecting all discarded polythene items including plastic shells of food and non-food items, wires and electrical items, tires, toys, plastic utensils, shoes, clothes, sacks, including openly discarded polythene and plastic bags. The campaign was started in December, 2019 and continued till mid-March. During the campaign, Tilottama Municipality was made the first zero polythene area in Nepal. The campaign was successful in collecting about 80,000 sacks of polythene products by encouraging the city dwellers through education and public awareness. During the campaign, a two-day environmental awareness program was conducted in 85 academic institutions.

Similarly, a massive program was held in 189 toll development organizations (Toll Bikash Sastha) within 17 wards of the city. All the city dwellers were trained on the deterioration of soil quality, imbalance in the ecosystem as well as the impact of burning it on human health. The municipality has started this campaign for the first time in Tilottama as it is certain that there will be a complex problem in the future if it is not managed and minimized. As the Zero Polythene Campaign has covered most of the indicators of sanitation, the municipality of Tilottama was also declared the first sanitary municipality in Nepal. Under the direction of world-renowned and zero-polythene Tilottama campaigner, environmentalist and founder president of SEEM Nepal Nipesh DHAKA, the campaign has become a zero-polythene with the objective of managing and minimizing polythene products to the general public.

The campaign was organized by SEEM Nepal in a program of Greenery Nepal and collaborate with the Tilottama municipality. The ZERO POLYTHENE TILOTTAMA was declared on March 12, 2008 by Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Hon’ble Ghanshyam Bhushal.
